One of the blessed things about being a Mum is the pride you get in seeing your children achieve. This weekend was one of those weekends. Yesterday I sat and watched my son, as I do every week, play for his Club Soccer Team. Pride consumes me as I see him running around the field with a massive smile on his face. He loves the game, but more importantly, he loves playing with his mates. He can be competitive, but mostly he just wants to be with his friends. He gets great joy in passing to his teammates and seeing them score a goal, knowing that he helped them enjoy that moment. How does a boy of 10 get to be this humble?
He also has great skills. Today I sat and watched him play a couple of games in his representative team. You can see its still fun, even though the seriousness of the game has started to kick in. The boys share something in common - a game they love. And the coaches can coach all they want, the parents can sit on the sidelines (or sometimes try and get onto the fields themselves) and the refs and try and control them. But no matter what any of them do, they can't control their love for the game. They can't teach that, they can't coach it, but they must nurture it. For if you lose sight of what you love, you lose motivation.
Today was about watching and enjoying my son's love for a game. But today reminded me of what we must always remember as educators. Children have passions, loves, things that ignite their souls. The great educators find these passions and connect them to the classroom. We have to keep the fire going and not let it burn out.
Congratulations Brock on a fantastic weekend of Soccer. Your passion and love for the game and your teammates is precious. I am so proud. - Love Mum.
